Young Democrats of Chatham County

Continuing the Proud Tradition of Positive and Effective Leadership in North Carolina

Ever felt like your opinion didn't matter? Like you would never get heard amongst the roar of your elders? Ever wanted to fight for a worthy cause but not wanted to venture on alone?

Now you can take action!
The Young Democrats of Chatham County are uniting to fight for causes important to the young people whose voices often get left unheard. It's only with continued involvement and a strong, passionate coalition that we can address current issues such as recreation, future employment and the current state of our schools. Action has already been put into motion. Don't miss out on the chance to make a difference!

About the Young Democrats
On March 5, 1932 the first national meeting of the Young Democratic organization was held in Washington DC. Delegates from 27 states and the District of Columbia were present as well as five additional states represented by proxy. Tyre Taylor, leader of the North Carolina chapter, was chosen as the first President of the Young Democratic Clubs of America.

The Democratic National Convention in Chicago was the next stop in the YDCA's path. From a small office in Raleigh, three members of the Young Democrats of North Carolina began in May 1932 to arrange by telephone a dinner over a thousand miles away. Although few resevations were confirmed, and some guest speakers were indefinite, over 600 people attended. Those Young Democrats heard Franklin D Roosevelt launch the "New Deal" in his stirring acceptance of the nomination as Democratic candidate for President.

Shortly thereafter, the Democratic national Committee, upon the recommendation of Chairman James A Farley, adopted the Young Democratic Clubs of America as the official youth organization of the Democratic party. Young Democratic groups had existed in various states for many years prior to the founding of the national organization, but now there was a bona fide national organization to coordinate and stimulate the work of state clubs.

Today the Young Democrats of America is a youth-led partisan political organization whose mission is to mobilize young people to participate in the electoral process boasting 42 chartered states and 780 local chapters. This includes high school students, college students, young workers, and professionals of whom all have the interest of their community at heart and work hard to affect the democratic process.   Through trainings, hands-on campaign experience and leadership opportunities, YDA provides the infrastructure for young people to engage in partisan civic participation and prepares the youth generation to serve as leaders at the state, local and the national level. A 43,000 plus membership reflects the broad diversity of both the nation and the Democratic Party.
